Hostinger website slow? 9 fixes that actually work

8 min read

Find out what's slowing your site down, then fix it: LiteSpeed Cache, the CDN, PHP version, images, plugins, resource limits and the data center, roughly in order of impact.

First, measure

Run your homepage and one typical post through Google PageSpeed Insights. Note two numbers: Time to First Byte (how long the server takes to respond) and Largest Contentful Paint (when the main content appears).

A slow first byte points at the server side: caching, PHP or resource limits (fixes 1, 3, 6 and 7). A fast first byte with a slow LCP points at the page itself: images, theme and plugins (fixes 4, 5 and 8).

1. Turn on LiteSpeed Cache

Hostinger runs LiteSpeed web servers, and the LiteSpeed Cache plugin talks to the server directly. It's the biggest single speed-up for WordPress, and Hostinger usually installs it for you.

Make sure it's active and page caching is on. Remove other page-cache plugins (WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache, WP Super Cache): two caches fight each other and often make things slower.

2. Enable the CDN

Premium and higher plans include Hostinger's CDN. Turn it on in hPanel for your website. It serves images, CSS and JavaScript from locations close to each visitor, which helps most when your audience is spread across countries.

3. Use a current PHP version

Newer PHP versions run WordPress noticeably faster. In hPanel's PHP configuration, pick the newest version your theme and plugins support. Check the site afterwards; if something breaks, step back one version.

4. Shrink your images

Oversized images are the most common reason a page feels slow. Resize images to the width they're shown at before uploading, and convert them to WebP. LiteSpeed Cache's image optimisation can do the conversion in bulk.

Turn on lazy loading for images below the fold, but not for the main image at the top of the page; lazy-loading that one makes LCP worse.

5. Cut plugins and heavy themes

Every active plugin adds work to every page load. Deactivate what you don't use, and replace plugins that load scripts on every page for a feature used on one.

Heavy page builders and multipurpose themes load a lot of code. If your theme is the problem, a lightweight theme such as GeneratePress, Kadence or Astra can make a large difference on its own.

6. Turn on object caching

Object caching keeps the results of database queries in memory so WordPress doesn't repeat them. It helps most on WooCommerce stores, membership sites and busy admin areas. On plans that offer it, enable it in hPanel and in LiteSpeed Cache's Object settings.

7. Check your resource usage

Shared plans have limits on CPU, memory and simultaneous processes. hPanel shows your usage for each plan. If you hit the limits regularly, the site slows down or shows errors at busy times however well it's optimised.

That's the point to upgrade: Business gives more resources than Premium, and Cloud Startup gives you dedicated CPU and RAM.

8. Clean the database

Old post revisions, spam comments, expired transients and leftovers from deleted plugins slow down database queries over time. LiteSpeed Cache has a database clean-up tool; take a backup first, then run it.

9. Host near your visitors

Distance adds delay to every request. If most of your visitors are in one region and your site sits on another continent, the first byte will always be slow. The CDN helps with static files, but pages are still built at your server.

Ask Hostinger support whether your site can be moved to a closer data center. If it can't, set up a new site in the right location and migrate into it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Hostinger site slow?

Usually because page caching is off, images are too large, or too many plugins are running. Less often, the site is hitting the plan's resource limits or is hosted far from its visitors.

Is LiteSpeed Cache better than WP Rocket on Hostinger?

On LiteSpeed servers, yes for page caching, because it uses the server's built-in cache. Use one page cache, not both.

Does Hostinger's CDN cost extra?

No. It's included on Premium and higher web hosting plans.

When should I upgrade my Hostinger plan for speed?

When hPanel shows you regularly hitting CPU, memory or process limits after you've optimised the site. Business is the next step up; Cloud Startup gives dedicated resources.
